Little-Known Facts About Dr. King

In honor of the Federal holiday commemorating his birthday, here are some things you may not know or may have forgotten about this great civil rights activist.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.:

was born on January 15, 1929

was such a bright student he was able to skip 9th and 12th grades and enter Morehouse College at age 15.

attended Crozier Theological College in Upland, Pennsylvania in 1948 where he met students from various backgrounds and denominations.

became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc in 1952.

received the Noble Peace Prize in 1964 at age 35.  At that time he was the youngest recipient.

was the first Black American to be selected “Time” magazine’s Man of the Year.  He appeared on the January 3, 1964 cover.

is the subject of U2’s song “Pride (In The Name of Love).”

encouraged Nichelle Nichols, who portrayed Uhura on “Star Trek,” to remain on the series after she had decided to quit.

was also an outspoken critic of the Vietnam War

is a martyr whose statue appears at the West entrance of Westminster Abbe in London, England.  It was unveiled in 1998.

Day was not a paid national holiday in all 50 states until 2000.
